Explore the relationship of the hard cage with the surrounding tissues and the effect on posture, movement and function.

Description:
We see the shape of the front ribcage as flared or funneled in. What is the appropriate position and movement of the ribcage in Pilates? Madeline will lecture on the function of the ribs in relation to abdominal control, breath and stability. In this workshop, you will see the optimal rib position and motion while performing the trunk movements in Pilates Mat, which is also relevant to apparatus work. Madeline will include a focus on diaphragmatic, psoas and intercostals work for improving ribcage structure and function. Experience and learn to activate the core for mobility and stability of the trunk and practice specific verbal and hands-on cueing. Strength moves will be presented that integrates the new feeling of the ribcage and creates a lasting change.

Mat Master Class for Sole to Spine
Madeline will teach a class based on her experience studying under Naja Cori, a first-generation Pilates teacher in New York. Naja's attention began with the feet. Madeline created this class starting with the feet and progressing into traditional mat sequencing with the focus on the pelvis and feet. Madeline feels that the focus on core work with Pilates has overshadowed the power of the connection of the feet into the pelvis. Naja Cori strongly believed one would not progress into the mat work or apparatus work without the foundation of balanced feet. Experience the mat work in a new way.

You will experience:
- How movement of the feet activates the pelvic floor and psoas giving a sensation of deep abdominal connection
- How mat work with attention on the action of the feet up into the hips and pelvis creates a stronger trunk
- How to strengthen the hips starting from the feet
- How to do traditional mat work with a 'whole body connection' feeling
- Enjoy a fun and energized workout

Hip Connections Advanced Concepts
Hip Connections Advanced Concepts: Stability, Support and Power

The hips provide the power in all activities from simply walking to high performance movement skills. Balanced hips are also important for support and stability to the body. Working the hips in relation to the spine will improve balance, athletic skills and eliminate potential back and knee issues. Madeline Black will demonstrate how to make simple movements more challenging with precise engagement of the hips and teach advanced Pilates work focused on the hip using the reformer, and integrating the magic circle with the reformer.

Course Objectives
The objective is to understand the role of the hips in stability, support of the trunk and the balance necessary for strong hips. The attendees will learn how to intensify simple Pilates movements through precise engagement and advanced exercises using mat, reformer, and cadillac.

Course Outline
- Introduction lecture on anatomy of the hip as a stabilizer, supporter and power mover
- Lecture and visuals through power point of commonly seen imbalances of the hip, specifically in gait
- Learn and practice assessment of the hip, lumbo-pelvic area and leg alignment
- Learn to cue simple reformer exercises, advanced reformer hip work, cadillac standing hip work and stability

Shoulder Complex: From Spine to Hand
In this workshop, Madeline presents how the shoulder moves with ease and strength through movement rhythm of the spine-scapula-arm. Learn to identify poor posture that inhibits strength, and how to coach the client to move more efficiently. Exercises for re-education and strength building will be taught along with weight bearing through arms. Learn how the wrist affects shoulder function, and its action when the elbow flexes and extends. Madeline will teach shoulder re-education through hands-on work with and without apparatus, weight bearing mat and reformer exercises and strengthening exercises using the Pilates apparatus.

Objectives:
- To understand the anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder complex
- Identify poor posture inhibiting shoulder strength
- Teaching tools for efficient movement of the shoulder complex

Upper Quadrant: Thoracolumbar Junction to Wrist
The shoulder is supported from the spine from one side and the wrist from the other. In this workshop, Madeline will show how the shoulder becomes a more efficient mover when the relationship of the spine and the wrist are working in contrast and in balance. She will lecture on biomechanics, fascial relationships, and positional dysfunctions. We will work with hands-on skills for reeducation of movement patterns. Exercises for the upper quadrant on Pilates apparatus and mat will be included and practiced.

Course Objectives
- To provide a deeper understanding and knowledge of the interplay between the spine, shoulder girdle, shoulder joint and through the arm into the wrist.
- Anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder
- Explore the fascial relationships of the T/L junction thought the wrist
- Hands-on skills for movement re-education
- Learn basic assessment skills, simple movements tools that allow clients access to feeling the connection of their upper body while performing upper body focused Pilates exercises
- Learn how to work with limited joint function of shoulder and wrist
- Practice time on Pilates apparatus
